Antioxidants-
In my research I have discovered that Antioxidants are
the newest fad. They appear to be found in plants and
whole grains. Included are Vitamins C & E. Research has
shown that Vitamin E is instrumental in preventing plaque
build up in artery walls.
However, the American Heart
Association has taken a cautious approach and are leaning
towards healthy diets. Their stand states that a healthy
diet will provide the nutrients and phytochemicals found in
fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These will also
prove to be a lower fat and lower cholesterol diet. The
nutrients and phytochemicals (which can be found in many
of the Shaklee products) are under study to find their
purpose and potential health benefits.
Important note-many
of the studies show that people who are not receiving
their daily dosages, do benefit from supplementing.
On
the down side- the study, Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene
Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study, showed that vitamin E
supplements could increase the chance of suffering from
hemorrhagic stroke. And the same study showed that
beta-carotene supplements were likely to increase the
risk of lung cancer and heart disease in smokers. These
results were also found in the Beta-Carotene and Retinol
Efficacy Trial (CARET).
So, my summarization is this:
If you are running short on your fruits and vegetables
tomorrow, supplement.
Do not take supplements as your
main source of Antioxidants(or anything else), do not
overdose on them, and use them as they are intended-as a
supplement.
